Grassington’s shops, cafes and hostelries have just about finished putting together their finishing touches ready for the now very familiar descent of the thousands of visitors ready and primed for yet another remarkable day out in the village. The now legendary Grassington Dickensian Festival not only offers a festive welcome but greets its visitors from far and near in its inimitable Victorian style as the whole village is transported back in time to a bygone era.
On all three Saturdays there will be the usual mix of entertainment on the bandstand including the Hebden Bridge, Barnoldswick and Nelson Brass Bands, the Penny Plain Theatre Company, Silsden Singers, Settle Voices, Baccapella and the Sneaky Experience Theatrical Company to name but a few. Living Statues, circus entertainers, buskers, shoe shine boys and pick pockets all add to the unique atmosphere. Around the village there will be close-up magic shows, Punch & Judy and Victorian Magic Lantern Shows.
Grassington will become a Christmas shopper’s paradise with all the shops brimming with great gift ideas, complemented by the traditional Christmas Market in the village squares where local charities and traders are given the chance to showcase their festive wares.
As ever, there will be a chance to visit Santa in his grotto as well as the usual torchlight nativity procession led by Mary and Joseph on their donkey, culminating in the community carol singing.
Angela Jackson, the Festival’s Co-ordinator says "I am amazed each year by the growing effort and contribution the entire community puts in to keep the event vibrant and successful."
The event runs on Saturdays 30th November, 7th and 14th December from 11am to 5pm. Park and ride facilities, at a cost of £8. per car, are in operation from Threshfield Quarry.
